Virtualisation and Consolidation on IBM BladeCenter

ibm bladecenter

The Customer.

As part of one of the UK’s leading providers of risk, savings and investment management products, the customer provides surveying and valuation services to the financial sector.

The Problem.

Due to expansion the customer had grown from 2 standalone servers to multiple servers over time.   Management, capacity planning, expansion and the lack of physical space had become issues.  The customer had plans to develop several internal software systems that would require additional infrastructure resources which would not have been possible with the constraints of space and the nature of standalone servers.

BLUE Profile Solution.

BLUE Profile supplied the customer with a complete end to end migration solution, from design to project management to implementation and then backed everything up with a BLUE Profile managed services support contract.  The solution utilised an IBM BladeCenter with an IBM DS series storage solution and Microsoft Server & Hyper-V server virtualisation.  IBM’s BladeCenter provided an ideal platform to consolidate the standalone severs into and small form factor enclosure which not only provided a reduction is space requirements but provided a much higher level of resilience due to the redundant nature of the IBM BladeCenter.  The IBM DS series SAN along with the IBM BladeCenter provided a scalable, manageable, cost effective and future proofed storage and server solution.

Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and Hyper-V provided a solution that would fully utilise the power and capacity of the IBM solution in a cost affected and flexibly infrastructure.  All servers where virtualised which provided additional benefits in reliance, disaster recover processes, reduced server deployment times and simplified support.  This also provided a platform for the customer to implement a private cloud solution for remote access based on Citrix and add productivity and data management solutions like Microsoft SharePoint, without any additional hardware and physical space requirements.

Future plans are to extend the private cloud with a full virtualised desktop solution for office and remote workers and the remote hosting of the IBM BladeCenter and storage in a secure hosting solution in order to provide a flexible and resilient IT infrastructure
